Gisela McKay: Who's Who at Canadian Foodies

Contributor: Gisela McKay

Gisela is both a born entrepreneur and a born foodie. Growing up in a restaurant with all the supplies and tools at your disposal will do that.

Gisela is President and Chief Mastermind of pixcode - the company that created CanadianFoodies.ca, the CanadaEventsCalendar and NaturalHealthcare.ca (among other projects). In addition to overseeing the technical development and maintenance of this site, expect her to pop in as a guest columnist sharing new finds in restaurants, food products, and preparation tips.

My personal rating system

In case you are wondering just how my internal rating system works, here's a peek into the inner workings of dining with me

10. Exquisite
Don't expect to see this often. It's like Nadia Comaneci getting all tens at the '76 Olympiad. This is the kind of food that makes you want to lie on the floor without any other distractions and just contemplate exactly what is going on in your mouth. But you don't - at least not in a restaurant.
9. Delicious
Highly recommended. This is the usual rating I would give really good food. The texture, the flavour, the everything just comes together perfectly.
8. Tasty
Recommended. Good food, would definitely eat this/here with fussy friends.
7. Satisfactory
A good, reliable restaurant when you are in the neighbourhood.

Apparently, from here down I make something known as the Unsatisfactory Dinner face.

I hadn't known what that face looked like (being the maker not the viewer) until we went to the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa and encountered a Inuit sculpture of a man with a spear and looking down at a fish (or was it a seal?). My sister spotted him and exclaimed: "OMG! There's the Unsatisfactory Dinner face!" Her husband concurred, so now I guess I know.

I do know that an astute wait-person will immediately come to the table and attempt to rectify the meal, so clearly it is disruptive even though silent.

6. Adequate
Usually bland. I'd eat it because I'm hungry and it's not completely awful.
5. Barely Adequate
OK, this isn't very good, but if I send it back, I am probably going to get something of the same calibre and I am hungry now, but I am ever ordering it again and probably never eating here again.

From here down, things absolutely get sent back to the kitchen

4. Unpleasant
Kindly exchange this for something else. Immediately.
3. Yuck
I am desiring to post a warning on the door so that no one else makes the same mistake in ordering this dish. Take it off the menu.
2. Inedible
Does anyone in the kitchen have any taste buds?
1. Utterly Inedible
Seriously? You feed people this? Is this legal?
